We caught local band Ms. Director at the Black Cat last Thursday and though the night succumbed to technical difficulties, the set was still thoroughly enjoyable. With Santo Domingo being the first record off of the band’s Ms. Director name, it was clear that the set would be filled with music off of that album; six to be specific. It was also highlight to hear some songs from their previous Cedars era, there might’ve been some Cartel in there, but I can’t be too sure. Either way, it fit the vibe quite well.
Starting off with a projector running a side-backdrop of old video footage that would fit the mood, Brian, Luke, Fico, and Ed came out to hoots and hollers of the local crowd and begun the “Savoy Hotel” instrumental intro that fell perfectly into “So Long” just as easily live as it does on the record. And so began the start of the technical difficulties surrounding the birthday boy, Fico Lazzaro’s amp and bass. It was a bummer that it happened during my favorite track off of the record but then again, once things started up again, they restarted the track.
This would happen again a couple times during the set and unfortunately, it took away from taking in the set as a whole. It was obvious the band tried to make the best of it as did everyone in the crowd who had to endure the stoppages. Would love to see them again sans technical problems!
