Our Track of the Day belongs to one of our latest Featured Artists, local indie-eletro band Ms. Director. “So Long” is the second track off of their latest record Santo Domingo and under this new band name.
This is what lead vocalist Brian Leatherman had to say about the track, “Well, in terms of So Long, the sound and feel of the track was inspired by M83′s first formal release,Dead Cities, Red Seas, and Lost Ghosts. We were all such fans of that record when it originally came out, what with it’s warm synths, layer upon layer of keys and texture, and huge “wall of sound” feel. We like to think that is our wheelhouse and, as most can tell, it is a sound that we naturally gravitate to. So, we started with the synth progression that comes in shortly after the piano/bell intro and took it from there, adding our own sound with a few soaring guitar lines, some light and airy keyboard melodies, and a four to floor beat at the end of the track. Inspiration for production of the track varies, with influences ranging from my time spent blasting vinyl on the office monitors at Deep Dish Records (as an intern during the height of the DC dance/house era), to my many nights spent absorbing each and every little sound effect from the album Lost Souls by Doves. In the end, we’re extremely pleased with how the track turned out and like to think of it as a great soundtrack for cross country flights, train rides through the country, or late nights filled with bourbon.”
