Our Track of the Day belongs to local Next Big Thing winners, Western Affairs with their track 1999. The 3-part experimental pop group just released their first EP “2000″ back in July and have been playing shows at many of DC’s popular venues. We spoke to lead-vocalist Alex Lee about the track and he said this:
1999 is the first song I wrote under the name Western Affairs. Like all the other songs on the upcoming EP, its an emotional release.
My intent in writing it was to express my discontent in my past self. We all have things that we regret and hope to change, so we can have less difficulty in our lives. I used to think of the year 2000 as a period of such change, when people could travel in flying saucers and travel back in time. That explains our use for the reverb and outer space-like synths. I named this song 1999 because it is the eve of my change and because “I couldn’t take it anymore.”
